Masha Vereshchenko was born in Russia and emigrated to Detroit at age 12.
Artist statement:
"I learned English by watching Nickelodeon. I grew up pale in a Detroit ghetto. Maybe that’s why I find Drag queens so inspiring. Their playfulness, self-expression, and daily triumph over struggle are the essence of self-empowerment, of outsiders proclaiming their right to exist and to contribute to the collective understanding of what it means to be human. My art represents the massive grey area in which outsiders and the mainstream coexist, mixed and matched, the stark lines of “normal” sexuality blurred into a glittered haze.
My paintings also deal with deeply personal events in my life. Ideas come up from within me, and sometimes it isn’t until after the paint dries do I realize what I’ve been wrestling with all those hours, days, weeks, months. Sometimes it’s addiction. Sometimes it’s death. Other times, the process of creating gives me the illusion of being in control of the uncontrollable. Making art is how I navigate and make sense of the intensity, beauty, and sometimes, the awfulness of being alive."
